We welcome anyone at St Jude’s, whether you are familiar with what we do or not. But so that you have the best chance of feeling at ease, here are some things that you might expect when you visit us.
People at St Jude’s are generally relaxed. Most people wear casual clothes that fit the seasons. Our ministers usually don’t wear any distinctive clothes, but can be identified by the name badges that they wear.
You will be offered (and encouraged to wear) a name tag when you come. This helps people be friendly, and not embarrassed to talk to you (especially if they have met you before and forgotten your name). Please make sure you get one when you come in. Regulars and visitors alike wear the “stick on” variety, so you won’t be singled out as a visitor.
Most of our services last for about 1 hour 15, to 1 hour 30 minutes. They include singing songs, praying, reading from the Bible and hearing a talk about what the Bible means and how it applies to us. You can participate in as much or as little as you feel comfortable.
Our services follow the plan and shape of the Anglican prayer book, but we don’t use the actual books. The words of the songs and some of the prayers will be read from the screen. Our music is usually led by a band, that will have a range of instruments in it.
We celebrate the Lord’s Supper in all our services at least once a month (twice a month at 9am). If you are Christian believer, you are welcome to join us in remembering Jesus’ death and resurrection in this symbolic meal. Or if you’d prefer, you can just sit in the seats while others take part. No-one will think this is strange.
In the morning services, the children tend to be in with the whole church for the first part of the service, but go out for age appropriate teaching part way through. All of our Children’s leaders have current “working with children” accreditation. We take their safety very seriously. There is a Parents’ Room at the back of the church, where you can go during the service if your child needs some time out, but you can still hear and see what is happening.
We do hope this will make you feel a little more at home. We look forward to welcoming you on a Sunday.
